Now there is evidence that silicone breast prostheses does not have affect on the risk of cancer and autoimmune diseases. Remains the risk that the bag tears have. This risk was recently re-evaluated.

A tear of the bag, which in some cases allowed release of silicone in the body slowly removed silicone out of use for the breast implantsThe results of a field study provided new insights. They are not really alarming, but hey require additional attention. The only way to correctly assess risk, is an annual follow-up by MRI. First MRI should be at least three years for patients who previously received an implant. During that period, 317 prosthesis intact. Two years later, 280 of them were still in place, of which 33 clear tear (10%) and a possible tear 23 (7%) showed. Age of the implant was its most important predictive factor: the risk tripled in prostheses 6 to 7 years old compared with implants of 3 to 5 years. 98% of modern implants, which were introduced three years ago, after five years would still not torn, after ten years would still be 85%.

Conclusion: between the third and tenth year after implantation up to 15% of the prostheses cracks. The implant should be checkd at least every five years.
